John L. Sousa
LOWELL John L. Sousa, 69, of Lowell, died March 6, 2008 at Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington after a long battle with cancer. He was the husband of Leocadia ( Silveira) Sousa, with whom he celebrated their 34th Wedding Anniversary this past Ocotber.
Born July 4, 1938, in Sao Jorge, Azores, Portugal, he was a son of the late Antonio and the late Liduina (Lopes) Sousa, and was educated in Portugal. While in Sao Jorge, he was a farmer, raising livestock and crops. In 1966, he came to the United States, first making his home in Watsonville, California before moving to Lowell in 1973, where he has resided for the past 34 years.
Mr. Sousa worked as an assembler for Wang Laboratories in Lowell for eleven years before working as a machine operator at Cambridge Tool and Dye in Billerica for twelve years prior to his retirement. He was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church and a member of the Holy Ghost Society, the Portuguese American Center - the ‘Blues’ club, and he loved fishing when he wasn’t enjoying time with his family.
In addition to his wife, Leocadia, he is survived by two sons, George S. Sousa and Danny S. Sousa both of Lowell; brothers and sisters, Domingos L. Sousa of Watsonville, CA, Antonio L. Sousa and his wife, Conciecao, of Helmar, CA, Maria S. Pedro Bettencourt and her husband, Jose, of Watsonville, CA, Maria Trindade Sousa of Watsonville, CA, Manuel L. Sousa and his wife, Maria Jose, of Sao Jorge, and Sofia Matos and her husband, Ermengildo, of Sao Jorge; and many nieces and nephews including Steve Sousa and Mike Sousa of Tewksbury, Eddie Matos of Lowell, Lucy Perrotta and her husband, David, of Lowell, Maggie Reis and her husband, Michael of Stoughton, and many grand nieces and grand nephews.
He was also the uncle of the late David Sousa and the late Diana Sousa.
YOU ARE INVITED TO HIS CALLING HOURS 4 UNTIL 8 P.M. ON SUNDAY. ON MONDAY, HIS FUNERAL WILL BEGIN AT 9 A.M. AT THE MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL (978 OR 800) 458-6816.
