Mary Rita Newell

DRACUT        Mary Rita (Vieira) Newell, 85, a longtime resident of Lowell, died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at Life Care Center in Billerica, after a brief illness with her family by her side. She was the widow of the late Daniel W. Newell, Sr., who died June 28, 1985.
     A daughter of the late Manuel and Mary (Espinola) Vieira, she was born November 28, 1923, in Lowell.
      Mrs. Newell was a communicant of St. Margaret Church. She was employed as a Para Professional at the Morey School for over 30 years.
      She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family, watching local sports, crocheting and playing cribbage at the East End Club. She was a member of the Dracut American Legion Women's’ Auxiliary, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 662 Women's’ Auxiliary and with her late husband, volunteered for many years at Callery Park. 
     Her survivors include five children, Donna M. Kowalski and her husband, Stephen, of Lowell, Marianne Albrecht and her husband, David, of Dracut, Kimberly A. Pearson and her husband, James, of Dracut, Daniel W. Newell, Jr. of Lowell, his friend Jan Richardson of Hudson, NH and John T. Newell and his wife, Christine, of New Hampshire; grandchildren, Jenna Autio and her husband, Kenneth, Jessica Starling and her husband, John, Stephen Kowalski and his wife, Melanie, Sarah Dutton and her husband, Brian, Michael Kowalski, James Pearson, Keely Pearson, and Hannah Pearson, Theresa Newell and Elizabeth Newell and Daniel Newell III, Caitlin Mae Newell and Johnny Newell; three great grandchildren, Ariel Starling, Luke Autio and Lanee Kowalski; her sister, Evelyn Proulx of Dracut; her brothers, George Vieira and his wife, Irene, of Lowell, and John Thomas Vieira and his wife, Nancy, of Lowell;  a brother in law, Dennis Newell and his wife, Janet; sisters in law, Mildred Dyer, Patricia McKenzie and her husband, Roger, Barbara Brodeur and her husband, Ed, Alice Newell and Jean Newell;  also many nieces, nephews, cousins and many close friends, including Lee Schaeffer and Karen Atkins.
       She is also the sister of the late Charles Vieira, William Vieira, John S. Vieira, and sister in law of the late Gerard Proulx, Roseanne Vieira, Harry Newell, Donald Newell, John Newell, Bradford Newell, Tyler Dyer, Shirley and Leo 'Zeke' Wilson.


YOU ARE INVITED TO HER CALLING HOURS FROM 4 UNTIL 8 P.M. ON TUESDAY, MAY 19, 2009.

ON WEDNESDAY, HER FUNERAL WILL BEGIN AT 8:30 A.M. AT THE MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL, MA 01852.

HER FUNERAL MASS WILL BE OFFERED AT 9:30 A.M. AT ST. MARGARET CHURCH.
