John P. Machado

Loving father, grandfather, brother

LOWELL John P. Machado, 88, a lifelong resident of Lowell, died Thursday, December 20, 2012, at Lowell General Hospital-Saints Campus. He was the widower of the late E. Theresa (McNamara) Machado, who passed away in 2004.

The first of eight children of the late Manuel and the late Bertha (Vieira) Machado, he was born October 20, 1924, in Lowell, and was educated in the local schools, graduating from Lowell High School, Class of 1943.

Mr. Machado started working for the Boston and Maine Railroad as an apprentice machinist and after completing the apprentice program, spent one year working to rebuild railroad rail beds, laying ties and tracks. From there he made his career working as a machinist in various machine shops for over 30 years.

In 1976 he entered the Vocational Education degree program at Fitchburg State College. In 1979, he was hired to teach machine technology at the Greater Lowell Vocational Technical High School and went on to graduate from Fitchburg State College in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. He taught at the Vocational High School until 1997 when he retired, and continued to subsitute teach during retirement.

He resided in the Highlands Section of the City, and was a communicant of St. Margaret’s Church and was a past president for many years of the St. Anthony's St. Vincent DePaul.

Family was the most important thing to John and he enjoyed spending time with his children, his grandchildren and his extended family. He also helped out at the soup kitchen and was a Eucharistic Minister at Willow Manor from St. Margaret's Church. Before his wife passed away, he enjoyed traveling to Foxwoods. Since 2005, he enjoyed spending time at the Lowell Senior Center, playing pool, exercising in the gym, and socializing over coffee. He was also proud of the fact that he went skydiving at the age of 85 with his grandson John.

He is survived by his son, Joseph M. Machado of Lowell; his daughter, Ann L. Machado of Lowell; his grandchildren, Benjamin A. Machado of Austin, TX, Chelsea C. Machado of Somerville, Madeline G. Machado of Saco, ME, Jason J. Doole, Jesse J. Doole, and John J. Doole all of Lowell; his sisters, Virginia Coviello and her husband, Anthony, of Tewksbury, Roselyn Machado of Lowell, Rose Lorenzo and her husband, Francis, of Lowell, and Dorothy Brown and her husband, Herbert, of Warwick, RI; his brother in law, John McNamara and his wife, Julie, of Tewksbury and Victor Sousa of Lowell; his sister in law, Delores Machado of Dracut; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was also the brother of the late Mary Sousa, Joseph Machado, and Edward Machado and brother in law of the late James and Grace McNamara, Edward and Mildred McNamara, Ann and Jack Roddy, Alice and Henry Tucker, and Joseph McNamara.
