Fernando F. ‘Gil’ Borges

LOWELL Fernando F. ‘Gil’ Borges, 66, of Lowell, died unexpectedly, May 17, 2012, at Lowell General Hospital, after a long illness. He was the husband of Rita (Borges) Borges, with whom he celebrated their Thirty Eighth Wedding Anniversary last December.

A son of the late Joao and the late Ester Borges, he was born November 2, 1945, in Terciera, Azores, where he was educated and worked as an electrician. He came to the United States in 1977 with his family, settling in Lowell, where he made his home until his death. He was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church.

Gil, the biggest fan ever of F.C. Porto, also enjoyed traveling to the beach with his family for picnics and other family gatherings. His family was very dear to him, especially his two daughters, and his grandson, Andrew, who were his pride and joy.

Mr. Borges was a member of the Portuguese American Civic League. Shortly after coming to the United States, he started working as an electrician for Pellon, and worked there until his retirement in 1996.

In addition to his wife, Rita, he is survived by his daughters Sandra de Sousa and her husband, Jammy, of Lowell, and Lisa Borges of Lowell; his grandson, Andrew de Sousa of Lowell; his brother, Jorge Borges of Terciera; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

He was also the brother of the late Joao Carlos Borges, brother in law of the late Venancio Borges and the uncle of the late Venancio Borges Jr, and Luis Borges.

YOU ARE INVITED TO HIS CALLING HOURS 4 UNTIL 8 P.M. ON SUNDAY, MAY 20. ON MONDAY HIS FUNERAL WILL BEGIN AT 8 , A.M. AT THE MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL 978-458-6816.
