Richard Moloney

LOWELL      Richard B. ‘Pops’ Moloney, 64, a lifelong resident of Lowell, passed away Monday, August 21, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband to Robin P. (Gordon) Moloney, with whom he would have celebrated their Thirty Fifth Wedding Anniversary this coming New Years Eve.

A son of the late John and the late Mary (Boyle) Moloney, he was born January 26, 1953, in Lowell, was raised in the City and served as altar boy and member of the marching band while attending Sacred Heart Grammar School.  He then graduated from Lowell High School.

After his graduation from High School, Mr. Moloney enlisted with the United States Air Force, serving his Country from August of 1972 until his honorable discharge in August of 1975 as a Sergeant.

He made his lifelong home in Lowell, and was a former member of St. Jeanne D’Arc Parish, and a communicant of St. Rita’s Parish.   Richard retired from the United States Postal Service in 2012 after thirty two years of service.

Pops coached PYO Little League Baseball for over twelve years, having coached all of his sons during their baseball years.  He was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles.  He was also an enthusiastic follower of the Boston Red Sox as well as the other Boston Sports Teams, but his greatest passion was being a devoted grandfather to his grandchildren, whom he enjoyed and loved with all his heart. He also enjoyed spending time with the friends he made at the Lowell V.F.W. Post 662.

Besides his loving wife, Robin, he is survived by his children, Erin J. Thielo and her husband, Felix, of Lowell, David R. Moloney and his wife, Leah, of Lowell, Michael M. Moloney of Lowell, and Joseph T. Moloney and his wife, Allison, of Bangor, Maine; his beloved grandchildren, Ava Thielo and Oliver Thielo, May Moloney and Cal Moloney, and his fifth grandchild, Emma Thielo, due this October; his three brothers, John Moloney and his wife, Pam, of Dracut, Bill Moloney of Lowell and Michael Moloney of Lowell; his brothers in law, Gary Gordon and his wife, Lois, of Lowell and Mark Gordon of Nashua, NH; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Richard was predeceased by his sister, the late Judy Moloney and his brother in law, the late Brian Gordon, and also his mother in law and father in law, the late Dolly Gordon and the late Bill Gordon.
