Margaret Mary ‘Peg’ Shaughnessy
LOWELL Margaret Mary ‘Peg’ (Callahan) Shaughnessy, 89, of the Highlands section of Lowell, passed away Tuesday, December 8, 2015, after a brief illness at home with her family at her side. She was the beloved wife of the late Leo E. Shaughnessy, Sr., who passed away in 1988 after forty years of marriage.
She was born February 15, 1926, in Lowell and was a daughter of the late Stephen J. and the late Mary (Clifford) Callahan. Peg grew up in Lowell and was educated in the Lowell school system.
Peg was a lifelong Lowell resident, residing in the Highlands area for more than fifty years. She was a communicant of St. Margaret Parish and was a member of the Blesses Virgin of Mary Sodality as well as the League of Catholic Women. She was also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Lowell and many senior citizen organizations throughout the City. She was employed as a Claims Clerk for the Division of Unemployment Security for twenty four years before her retirement in 1993. Peg’s favorite past time was being at the beach, especially Seabrook Beach with her family where she would rent a cottage every year.
Peg is survived by her children, Leo Shaughnessy, Jr. and his wife, Ellen, of Lowell, Mary Beth Giroux of Lowell, and Ann Marie Mulhare and her husband, James, of Nashua. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins and her sisters in law, Jean Callahan and Helen Callahan both of Lowell.
She was also the mother of the late Kevin J. Shaughnessy who passed away February 1992; sister of the late Stephen J. Callahan, John Callahan, J. Clifford Callahan, and Patricia Keene.
VISITATION WILL BE HELD PRIVATELY AT HER REQUEST. ON THURSDAY, YOU ARE WELCOME TO JOIN PEG’S FAMILY FOR HER FUNERAL MASS AT ST. MARGARET PARISH, 374 STEVENS STREET, LOWELL AT 10 A.M.. BURIAL WILL FOLLOW AT ST. PATRICK CEMETERY ON GORHAM STREET IN LOWELL. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, DONATIONS IN HER NAME MAY BE MADE TO THE ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION OF MA/NH, 480 PLEASANT STREET, WATERTOWN, MA 02472 OR TO THE MEGAN HOUSE FOUNDATION, 32 BERRY RD, LOWELL MA 01854.
