Jose G. Pereira
LOWELL Jose G. Pereira, 94, of Lowell, passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at Lowell General Hospital, Saints Campus, after a brief illness with his family at his side. He was the beloved widower of the late Julia R. (Dias) Pereira who passed away in June of last year.
A son of the late Jose and the late Maria Pereira, he was born in Pico, Azores, Portugal, and was raised and educated there. He worked as a farmer in Pico and served in the Portuguese Military before coming to the United States in 1977 with his family, joining his daughter, Maria and her husband, Manuel Correia.
He made his home in the Back Central Street Neighborhood, and was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church. His favorite past time was spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also enjoyed spending time at the Portuguese Senior Center and playing cards, and was a member of the Holy Ghost Society. For the past 3 years, he made his home at The Blair House of Tewksbury, where he will be remembered fondly by his many friends.
He worked as a machine operator for Joan Fabrics for several years before his retirement.
He is survived by his children, Maria J. Porto and her husband, Joao, of Lowell, Jose M. Pereira of Canada, Maria R. Correia and her husband, Manuel, of Tewksbury, and Bertina Matos and her husband, Manuel, of Canada; his ten grandchildren, John Porto of Pelham, NH, Victor Porto of Salem, NH, Jorge Porto of West Roxbury, Brian Correia of Windham, NH, Erica Silva of Lowell, and Jerry Pereira, Sandy Pereira, Steven Matos, Marlene Jones and Kevin Matos all of Canada; his eleven great grandchildren; his sister, Maria Adelaide Garcia of Pico, Azores, Portugal; his brother, Francisco Conceicao of Lowell; his sister in law, Sidonia of Canada; and many nieces, nephews, and close friends.
He was also the brother of the late Manuel Pereira and the late Guillerme Pereira.
