Jose C. Leal
LOWELL Jose C. Leal, 83, of Lowell, died Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at home with his family at his side after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Guadalupe (Bettencourt) Leal, with whom he would have celebrated their Fifty Eighth Wedding Anniversary November of 2014.
A son of the late Jose C. Leal and the late Arora (Augusta) Leal, he was born April 18, 1930, in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal and was raised and educated there. He worked as a painter while in Graciosa. In 1975, he came to the United States making his home in Lowell. Over the years, he often returned to Graciosa to spend time with family.
Mr. Leal made his home in Lowell and was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church. He worked for Paris Shoe, Altronics, and retired from Wang Laboratories. His passion was soccer, and each week he watched soccer with his son. He also enjoyed gardening at his Lowell home and also had his gardens in the Azores. He was also a former member of the Portuguese American Civic League.
In addition to his wife, Guadalupe, he is survived by his son, Serafim Leal and his wife, Georgina, of Lowell; his grandson, Kevin Leal and his wife, Heather, of Lowell; his granddaughter, Stephanie Leal of Dracut; his great granddaughter, Lillyana, of Dracut; his sister, Bernadette Bettencourt of Lowell; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also a brother of the late Arthur Leal, the late Lino Leal, the late Raul Leal, the late Manuel Leal, and the late Francelina Santos.
