Jose Batista Rego

LOWELL Jose Batista Rego, 72, of Lowell, died unexpectedly Friday, April 23, 2010, at Lowell General Hospital. He was the husband of Maria E. Oliviera with whom he celebrated 46 years of marriage this past February.

A son of the late Manuel Rego and the late Angelina Batista, he was born September 23, 1937, in Santa Maria, Azores, Portugal. He was educated in that area, and enlisted in the Portuguese military at a young age. After his military service he settled on the island of Terceira, where he met his wife, Maria. After their marriage, they moved to South Africa, living there for 4 years before coming to the United States in 1969, settling in Lowell.

Mr. Rego was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church and was a member of The Holy Ghost Society and Trindade. An avid soccer fan, and player in his younger days, he was a dedicated fan and supporter of Sporting CP. He was also a member of The Blues Club and The Reds Club. In his spare time, he could be found fishing, gardening or spending time with his family. He also worked for many years in the cable manufacturing industry at James Monroe Inc. in Lancaster as a Supervisor

Besides his wife, Maria, he is survived by a son, Reinaldo Rego of Lowell, 3 sisters; Maria Cabral and her husband, Januario, Gloria Henchy and her husband, Francisco, and Fernanda Brazil all of Hudson, 2 brothers; Joao Rego and his wife, Lucrania of Hudson and Manuel Rego and his wife, Mary Beth of Clinton, 2 brothers in law, Desidero Meneses and his wife, Norma and Joao Cardoso and his wife, Inocencia, all of Lowell. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and godchildren.

YOU ARE INVITED TO HIS CALLING HOURS FROM 4 UNTIL 8 P.M. ON MONDAY, APRIL 26. ON TUESDAY, HIS FUNERAL WILL BEGIN AT 9 A.M. AT THE MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL 978-458-6816.
