Helder M. Silva
LOWELL Helder M. Silva, 66, of Lowell, passed away Tuesday, December 22, 2015, at his home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous seven month battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Maria A. (Torres) Silva, with whom he shared the past fifty three years in friendship, love, and marriage.
A son of Sofia (Pereira) Silva of Lowell and the late Manuel N. Silva, he was born December 2, 1949, in Graciosa, Azores, Portual, and was educated in Portugal. Mr. Silva served with the Portuguese Military. For more than twenty years, he worked in the Construction Trade throughout the Azores before coming to the United States in 1973 with his family, settling in Lowell.
A communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, he was also a member of the Portuguese Civic League, the St. John’s Club, and the Holy Ghost Society.
He had many passions in life, however spending time with his family is what brought him the most happiness. He was a proud supporter of Benfica and an overall soccer fan. He also enjoyed traveling, especially when he traveled back to his homeland of Portugal.
He worked as a shoemaker supervisor for New Balance, Fila for over twenty years and had also worked at Interstate Container for 8 years.
Besides his loving wife, Maria, he is survived by his sons, Kevin Silva and his girlfriend, Ann Trendler, of Somerville, and Brian Silva of Lowell; his brother in law, Manuel Torres of Lowell; his cousins, Mary Jo Correia and her friend, Mark, of Lowell, Manuela Cunha and her husband, Arthur Cunha, of Dracut, Madelina Correia of Lowell, and Diana Pacheco and her husband, Peter, of Lowell, and many other cousins throughout Portugal.
He was also a son in law of the late Candido Torres and late Leoninda Torres.
YOU ARE INVITED TO HIS CALLING HOURS 7:30 UNTIL 9:30 A.M. ON SATURDAY MORNING, DEC. 26 AT THE MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL 978-458-6816. HIS FUNERAL MASS WILL BE OFFERED AT ST. ANTHONY’S CHURCH, 893 CENTRAL ST., LOWELL AT 10:30 A.M.. BURIAL IN LOWELL CEMETERY.
