Mark B. Bown, M.D.


Dr. Mark Bevil Bown was born on Sept 20, 1932 at Bexhill, in England. He died at Emerson Hospital in Concord on Tuesday September 3, 2013. The fourth child of Dorothy Ethel (Watson) Bown and Arthur Mervyn Bown, MC. His early life was spent in British India, where his father was stationed in the Indian Civil Service. His maternal grandfather had gone to Rangoon on a sailing ship and was in business there. It was in Burma that his parents had met. Most of his childhood and adolescence was spent on a large farm in the Welsh border area of Shropshire. He attended Shrewsbury School as a scholar, and then went to Trinity College, Oxford, where he was the Top Open Scholar. Graduating in medicine in 1957, he spent three years in the US before returning to England. After a stint as Registrar and locum Consultant in Chest Diseases at Edgware, he became the Chief Resident at Tampa General Hospital. A three year spell as Chest Specialist to the Government of the Bahamas followed. He then came to the Lowell area, and headed the Respiratory Department at Lowell General for 25 years. He also ran the Tuberculosis program in the City. He spent 14 years at the former Medical Associates of Chelmsford and he then started his own practice in Tyngsboro, where he stayed for 30 years. During this time he was School Doctor in Dracut and also worked at the Lowell Health Department. He served on the School Committee for three years, and was on the Board of Health for twelve, Dr. Bown was a Member of the Royal College of Physicians. He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda of 33 years as well as his three children; Sarah Louise and her husband Philip Chapman of Denver, CO, Ashley Mark of Aspen, Colorado and Dorian Arthur and his fiancee Charlene Temple of Nashua, NH; two grandchildren, Evangeline and Carter Chapman both of Denver CO. His Sisters; Lalage Bown of Shrewsbury, England and Jaqueline Benbow of Weald Kent, England and his Brother; Hugh and his wife Eira Bown of Surry, England
