Alfonso C. Silva

"Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather"

TEWKSBURY Alfonso C. Silva, 85, of Tewksbury, died Thursday, January 19, 2012, at Lowell General Hospital, after a lengthy period of declining health. He was the loving husband of Leontina ‘Lee’ (Pamplona) Silva whom he married in Graciosa over fifty years ago.
A son of the late Carlos and the late Maria V. (Silva) Silva, he was born July 19, 1926, in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, he grew up and was educated in Graciosa. In 1960, he moved to the United States with his family, settling in Lowell before making his home in Tewksbury for over thirty years since 1981.

Mr. Silva worked in the Lowell Mills and later worked for the Boston and Maine Railroad in the Billerica Car Shops before working for Amtrak in Somerville until his retirement in 1991. He was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, and was a member of the Holy Ghost Society and a former member of the Portuguese American Club, ‘the Blues Club’.

He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and also enjoyed gardening and making wine.
In addition to his wife, Lee, he is survived by his son, Diojenio ‘Geno’ M. Silva and his wife, Maria, of Tyngsboro; his granddaughter, Nicolle M. Silva of Lowell; his grandson, Kyle D. Silva of Tyngsboro; a great grandson, John P. McCarthy III of Lowell; his sister in law, Maria Helena Lima of Lowell; and many nieces, nephew, cousins, and friends.

He was also a brother of the late Arthur Silva, the late Louis Silva, the late Manuel Silva, and the late Irene Silva.

YOU ARE INVITED TO HIS CALLING HOURS 5 UNTIL 8 P.M. ON SUNDAY, JAN 22. ON MONDAY, HIS FUNERAL WILL BEGIN AT 9 A.M. AT THE MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL (978 OR 800) 458-6816.
